Despite their common name, guinea pigs are not native to Guinea, nor are they closely
related biologically to pigs. They originated in the Andes of South America, specifically in
Peru, where they are known by the name of “Cuy”, even having a national day in October.
This little rodent, folklore says, brings good fortune, prosperity, and good luck to its owners.
